Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Master Planning and Replacement Hospital

BACKGROUND:
Ranked as the fifth largest children’s hospital in the U.S., Nationwide Children’s is the primary pediatric health care provider for 37 counties, with more than 800 medical staff members and 4,500 employees. Faced with increasing volumes, the institution needed to replace its aging facility to accommodate growing patient needs.

STRATEGY:
Nationwide Children’s urban campus suffers from obstructed access and isolation. A strategic decision to reorient the entrance to the campus, rebuild the patient and community experience with the hospital and create a stronger impact on the delivery of children’s care regionally all directed toward a complete hospital replacement.

TRANSFORMATION:
With the oldest city park in Columbus adjacent to the hospital and bounded by disadvantaged neighborhoods, Nationwide Children’s expansion is being designed to enhance and embrace the neighborhood through a “hospital in the park” concept.  When complete, the hospital campus will advance the health and wellness of children and serve the community with the addition of valuable public park amenity.
