The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Clinical Campus Master Plan

BACKGROUND:
UT purchased the 250-bed St. Paul Hospital to transform it into the primary patient care setting for its Southwestern Medical Center. The campus will consolidate medical services, increase their inpatient setting to 750 beds and broaden its clinical capabilities.

STRATEGY:
FKP developed a five-phase replacement and expansion plan built around the principles of strong circulation and reinvigoration of the campus through healing garden concepts. Communication, collegiality and operational flexibility objectives establish the foundation for the project’s planning and design.

TRANSFORMATION:
The planning focused on new urbanism principles to create a vibrant economic engine. FKP suggested a new higher-density facility plan, incorporating sustainability and experiential environments such as urban plazas and gardens. Carefully placed parking interfacing with mass transit will result in reduced traffic congestion, improved accessibility and reduced ecological footprint.
