Texas Children's Feigin Center Named Landmark

April 9, 2010
Texas Children’s Hospital Feigin Center was recently honored with a 2010 Landmark Award for Best Medical Project from the Houston Business Journal.  The annual award recognizes commercial real estate projects and developments that “improve the look, feel and image” of the Houston area.

Designed by FKP Architects, Feigin Center’s expansion is the first component of Texas Children’s Vision 2010 Excellence to Eminence program to come to realization.  The project added eight floors atop an operating laboratory building, creating a 20-story research tower focused on the advancement of pediatric medicine.  The expansion provides an additional 222,000 square feet for research laboratories, clinical research offices and a unique pediatric simulation center.  Symbolizing a beacon of hope for the future, Feigin Center represents the vision of the late Dr. Ralph Feigin and the commitment of Texas Children’s to forge new frontiers in pediatric care, education and translational research.

In receiving the award, Peter Dawson, AIA, Senior Vice President of Facilities Services for Texas Children’s Hospital, cited the skill, dedication and collaboration of FKP, contractor W.S. Bellows Construction and the rest of project team as a critical factor in the project’s success.  Other members of the project team included Walter P Moore; Burns Delatte McCoy; Inventure Design; MJS Lighting Consultants; Peter M. Muller, Inc; Persohn/Hahn Associates; and White Oak Studio.

“Feigin Center is a testament to what can be accomplished through unwavering commitment and dedication,” commented Cynthia Walston, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP, Principal and Science and Education Practice Leader at FKP Architects. “The challenges were daunting — updating city codes, building atop a facility as delicate research was taking place, complex construction in a dense urban setting, etc. It would have been much easier to build from the ground up, but Texas Children’s and the project team faced the challenges head on and transformed the building. The result is a flexible, collaborative and efficient work environment that holds the key to a brighter future for all children.”

Feigin Center has also been recognized by R&D magazine as 2010 Laboratory of the Year Honorable Mention and Texas Construction magazine as Best Research Project of 2009.
