May 20, 2010
FKP Architects’ Senior Associate and Project Designer Mezio S. Zangirolami, AIA, LEED AP has been named among Houston Business Journal’s 2010 “40 Under 40” honorees. The annual awards program identifies the next 40 leaders on the rise who excel in their industries, are respected business leaders and show dynamic leadership in their communities.

Mezio has been excelling since he began his career at FKP in 1997 as an intern. Following his graduation from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Architecture, he continued assisting FKP’s clients with their challenges, gaining experience and contributing to large scale health care and education projects.

For the majority of his career, Mezio has focused on landmark health care projects, completing work across the nation. His design contributions include: a new landmark hospital for Children’s Hospital of Orange County; a new ambulatory center for the nation’s top ranked pediatric institution, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Memorial Hermann Southwest Heart and Vascular Institute; and Christus St. Catherine Health and Wellness Center.

“Mezio is one of the rising stars of our industry and our community; leading large, complex teams of professionals that literally shape millions of square feet of buildings,” said Diane Osan, FAIA, ACHA, Senior Principal at FKP Architects. “He combines curiosity and immense creativity with a deep empathy and insight into human needs and aspirations to make spaces that transform lives.”

“A testament to Mezio’s indelible contribution, recently his work helped garner the first Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence given to a pediatric facility,” commented Gary Owens, AIA, ACHA, Principal at FKP Architects. “The new pediatric intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Orange County was honored for its optimal healing environment. The project is now a national benchmark for the highest level of care for the sickest children.”

A registered architect and LEED accredited professional, Mezio is a long-standing member of American Institute of Architects and Rice Design Alliance. He remains an active UH alum and regularly attends design critiques at the UH College of Architecture to remain current on design issues facing the City of Houston. Representing the young designer and next generation leader, Mezio is regularly involved in collegiate career fairs, helping to recruit bright new talent for FKP. In his time away from the office, he recently completed the design and construction of his residence in The Woodlands, Texas.
